The journey of the new age, new millennium human has some predefined paths. When modern life gets more and more dictated by engineered and process foods, you invariably have a phase where in you have your own share of supplements.

The funny fact is most of the supplements are engineered and processed. Bhaii, shelf- life jo badhani hoti hai (even with supplements there is the same dilemma of shelf life, taste and repeat business)

My journey to Protein powders happened through the path of recreation sports. As one pursues the endurance game called running, you either learn or are told about recovery mechanism and the confusion begins!

  1. Ask your running buddy
  2. Ask your coach
  3. Ask “steal deal“ section of amazon or any of the online flash sale
  4. Ask your nutritionist

I will have my daily RDA of protein from natural resources, so what if I am a vegan or vegetarian.

Soon you realize that Protein is too sexy to be ignored.

I had and I still have my own doubts whenever we need to buy our next protein dabba (which for some weird reason, after India adopted to SI units (in stages between 1955 to 1962), still shouts its units in pounds.)

Whey?

Casein?

Isolate?

Hydrolysates? (more and more costly)

Direct Amino acids ( a kind of direct short cut )

Only BCCAs?

Plant based?

If plant based, then which one?

And once you use one particular brand then there can be issues with digestion, recovery, and recurring cost (when you have more family members consuming protein powder)

So here is the first experiment. I am trying to compile and share few of the protein powders which I have tried.

I am also hijacking the Wine Tasting concept for my 1st Protein

Tasting experiment!

 

   Wine Tasting: Protein tasting

 

  • Whey Protein: Café Mocha flavour by Avvtaar

     Serving per scoop: 35 gm

     Protein promised: 25 gm

     My experience:

a) light on tummy

b) gives less mouthful kind of feeling

c) It does not force you to register its presence, from the mouth to its journey down south.

d)Taste: As we are biased towards coffee flavors, we have liked the taste

e) After Taste: It does not carry any strong after taste

f) Recovery: Ok

This is one of the three which we have had for quite number of days, so we can relate it to post work out recovery bit easily.

 

  • Whey Protein: Belgium Chocolate flavour by Avvtaar

     Serving per scoop: 35 gm

     Protein promised: 25 gm

 

     My experience:

     1.OK on tummy

     2. gives more mouthful kind of feeling

     3. It is a bit heavy compared to café mocha during mouthful to journey down south.

      4. Taste: Sweet.

      5. After Taste: It does carry a mild after taste

      6.  Recovery: Ok

 

  • Muscle blaze (MB): Rich Milk Chocolate

Scoop size: 33 gm

Promised Protein: 25 gm

  1. Taste: Sweet

  2. Mouth-feel: Yes

3 On journey down south: It’s bit heavy. Usually, I take slowly sip by sip. It’s not easy when it comes to smooth digestion. Takes time for body to get adjusted.

4 After effect/taste remains

5 Recovery: Better

 

  • Muscle blaze (MB) : Plant based : Masala flavor: more for detox-immunity booster with promised iron, vitamins and zinc

a) Taste: Salty+ Spicey

b) Mouth-feel: Strong as if you are having masala soda, but without soda.

c)After effect/taste remains

 

  • Muscle blaze (MB): Plant based: B green : Strawberry flavour

Scoop size: 34 gm

Promised Protein: 25 gm

a) Taste: Tinge of strawberry, confusing flavor with mild bitter taste

b) Mouth-feel: Good. Viscosity like whey, but more grainy: coarse

c)After effect/taste remains with mild bitter after taste. Need to move your tongue around teeth/palate for cleanup operation. You tend to feel thirsty after finishing.

 

  • Health kart’s: Café Mocha

     Serving per scoop: 30 gm

     Protein promised: 15 gm

a) Journey down south: light on tummy

b) Mouth-feel – gives less mouthful kind of feeling

d)Taste: mild bitter, mild café but feeling of floury paste.

e) After Taste: bitter and similar to after effect of saccharine-based items. Need to move your tongue around teeth/palate for cleanup operation. You feel thirsty after finishing.

 

  • Muscle blaze (MB): Plant based: B green: Chocolate flavor

Scoop size: 36 gm

Promised Protein: 25 gm

a) Taste: Tinge of chocolate with mild bitter taste

b) Mouth-feel: thick and grainy.

c)After effect/taste: similar to after effect of saccharine-based items. Less cleanup operation with the help of tongue.  You feel rinsing your mouth after consuming.

 

  • Muscle blaze (MB): Plant based: B green: Café Mocha flavour

Scoop size: 34 gm

Promised Protein: 25 gm

a) Taste: Nice café on palate, mildly bitter.

b) Mouth-feel: less grainy.

c)After effect/taste: less after effect of saccharine-based items. Less cleanup operation with the help of tongue.  You have the taste similar to the after taste of consuming 80 % dark chocolate. You remain thirsty post drink.

 

Mixology

 

This journey will continue as and when I try more brands or types of  protein, but what becomes exciting is mixology!

Any protein powder becomes sexy if you experiment with some combination.

Disclaimer: Following experiments are purely mine and I do not suggest or recommend to anyone to try them. Once I posted in one of the endurance groups and someone gave me a good thrashing!

“You must not mix and match  medicines! This could be poison!

Jokes or Seriousness apart (how do you take your medicines, I mean protein, I  mean some edible combos ) I still love the experiments. There is an inherent thrill in pre, and post work out experiments.

Disclaimer: protein shots/smoothies के नाम पर जो भी आप देखते रहे हो वह प्रयोग मैं सिर्फ़ ख़ुद पर करता हूँ and this does not in any way mean that you are requested to do the same (one of my friends objected, so need to clarify 🙏😅😉)

 

Protein Smoothie

सत्तू powder, MB whey protein, aam panna powder, badam mix , flax seeds , pumpkin seeds , chia seeds, musk melon seeds , oregano spice sprinkler

mix 2 by 5mix 3 by 3mix 2 by 4mix 2 by 2mix 2 by 1

(BCAA, essential amino acids, iron, calcium, fiber, sodium C, vitamin B1, vitamin A etc )

 

Mixology 3 : Pre Run and Post Run

Before ( Pre ) & After ( Post )

 

Pre Run juice:

Beetroot + ginger + lemon

1 hour before the Sunday Long   Run (LR )

Post Sunday  Run

Protein drink:

Rajma + soyabean + kabuli chana + black urad daal

(Overnight भिगोए हुए and then boiled in a pressure cooker)

Wheat grass (antioxidant +vitamins + chlorophyl) + 2 bananas (Potassium+ Dietary fiber +vitamins) water

1 hour before the Sunday Long Run (LR)

Post Sunday Run

Protein drink:

Whey protein + peanut butter + milk + 2 eggs + little honey

mix 4 post 1 by 1mix 4 post 1 by 2mix 4 post 1 by 3mix 4 post 1 by 4

Pre-Run juice:

Amla + Jeera (antioxidant:261.5 mmol per 100 gr+

Magnesium+ Manganese+

Potassium +vitamins Polyphenols) + water

1 hour before the Sunday Long   Run (LR)

Post Sunday Run

Protein drink:

Whey protein + coconut   water + ice + थोड़ी बहोत मलाई )

Potassium + sodium +calcium + magnesium (basically good electrolytes ) +  protein
